Smokers trying to give up will no longer need to wear a patch or chew gum to
get their nicotine fix—soon they’ll be able to swallow it with an orange
juice or a beer. Eric Westman and his colleagues at Duke University in Durham,
North Carolina, have developed a nicotine solution that can be taken orally with
any drink. In 12-week tests on 25 people, success rates with the solution were
comparable to those with patches. What’s more, the solution provides a nicotine
