Ian Wilmut, creator of Dolly the cloned sheep at Edinburgh’s Roslin
Institute, has been reading What Mad Pursuit by Francis Crick (Basic
Books, 1990). Crick and James Watson discovered the structure of DNA, and having
read Watson’s account of events surrounding the breakthrough in Genes, Girls
and Gamow
(Knopf, reviewed 24 November),
Wilmut was interested in an
alternative view of these events. He’s also been stuck into fiction and has just
finished Melvin Bragg’s The Soldier’s Return(Sceptre, 2000).
