The US Department of Health has come up with an answer to the problem of
persuading parents to have their children immunised with the combined vaccine
for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). It has threatened to fine or even jail
parents who fail to comply, and to exclude their child from school. In just one
month, MMR coverage has rocketed from a dismal 67 per cent in December to more
