Budding cyborg

Kevin Warwick, the University of Reading’s would-be cyborg, has had another implant surgically placed in his arm. Three years ago, he had a temporary implant that allowed his office to track his position. With his new one, scientists will record electrical signals from an array of 100 silicon needles that push into the median nerve in his wrist. Movement and sensations such as pain and heat should produce different signals, says Warwick. “We’re then going to put signals into the nerves to see if we can get movement,” he says.
