IF YOU thought that steering clear of dodgy burger joints and rare steaks would be enough to avoid the food poisoning bug E. coli 0157, you’d be wrong. That idyllic camping jaunt to the country could put you at even greater risk.

Most cases of the potentially deadly bug are picked up from contact with animals, not food – despite high profile outbreaks such as the one in 1993 when American fast-food chain Jack in the Box poisoned 700 of its customers with E. coli 0157. Four people died as a result.
