THANK goodness Einstein didn’t have email, I thought, as I browsed through this latest volume of his collected papers, in English translation. We would have lost an immense amount of detail.

Volume 7 covers the three years after the First World War, when Einstein’s genius was still in full flower and he was becoming a global celebrity.
