The fast route to a longer, healthier life

THERE is only one anti-ageing strategy with any scientific basis: restricted calorie intake. But a study in mice suggests it might be possible to reap similar benefits while eating as much as usual. There is, however, a big catch: it involves eating only every other day.

No one is suggesting people adopt such a diet. But the study adds to the evidence that caloric restriction works by activating some kind of protective mechanism, rather than simply being a result of eating less and thus suffering less damage as food is metabolised.
