FOREWORDS can usually be skipped. Most have more weight and substance if they are read as afterwords, when the rest of the book is immediately relevant and your own impressions can be matched with the author’s aim and arguments. But, Ted Dadswell’s foreword to The Selborne Pioneer explains his reasons for carrying out the re-examination of Gilbert White’s life. You will need to be convinced, for this is a dogged book and will need dogged attention.
