A GROUP of 152 genome scientists known as the H-Invitational international consortium have announced a major step forward.

They have not only confirmed the existence of 21,037 of the 30,000 possible genes in the human genome identified by software programs, but have also created a database linking each gene to a huge amount of information. On their website (www.h-invitational.jp), users will soon be able to explore each gene’s sequence, the alternative ways it can generate RNA messages, the proteins each gene encodes and where the proteins are found in cells, and how the gene varies between individuals.…
