Snails threat to US
US officials are trying to prevent a plague of giant African land snails. The Department of Agriculture is hunting the snails after discovering a number being kept as pets in Wisconsin classrooms. Any escapees could breed rapidly and devastate crops, it says.
Mummy hoard unearthed
French and Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed more than 50 mummies while excavating tombs at Saqqara. The burials, discovered 25 kilometres south of Cairo, date from the 26th dynasty of Pharaohs in the 7th century BC.
