Incinerators linked to twin births

LIVING near a toxic waste incinerator increases the chance of having twins, according to a survey in Germany.

Nadia Obi-Osius’s team at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf interviewed 639 mothers. More than half lived in an industrial area near a toxic waste incinerator, while the rest lived either 20 kilometres away, in another industrial area, or further away in a non-industrial area. Around 5 per cent of women near the incinerator had twins, compared with 2 per cent in the other regions. The results will be published this month in Occupational & Environmental Medicine.
