Collins Tree Guide by Owen Johnson and David More, Collins, £25, ISBN 0007139543 Reviewed by Roy Herbert

DAVID More’s illustrations astonish by their beauty and detail. Owen Johnson provides the steps to identifying trees in Britain and non-Mediterranean Europe.

Tree watching, the authors say, is an engrossing but under-subscribed hobby. This guide should make it more popular. Britain’s trees, for example, are far more varied than many realise. The service tree, or “chequers”, has berries that taste like dates, from which you can make an alcoholic drink – hence the pub name. There’s lots more odd, interesting information here.
