A service to hide caller's identity

A CALIFORNIAN company has begun selling a telephone service that allows callers to pretend they are phoning from any number they choose. While the service may help law enforcement agencies dupe unwitting suspects, privacy advocates fear unscrupulous telemarketing firms and malicious callers will abuse it.

From September, Star38, based in Newport Beach, California, is offering customers a way of manipulating the caller identification system that transmits a caller’s phone number to the receiver.
