Disaster mitigation plans take shape

AT A time when our attention is focused on the Asian tsunami, 64 countries are set to pledge their support for an ambitious plan that aims to mitigate the effects of natural and manmade disasters, in addition to monitoring the overall health of the Earth.

Support has continued to grow since the idea was launched at a summit in Washington DC in 2003. On 16 February, ministers will sign off on a 10-year plan at the Earth Observation Summit in Brussels.
