Nuclear plant closure may be premature

SWEDEN’s people have got what they asked for, only to find they don’t want it any more. On Monday, the Barsebäck 2 nuclear reactor was officially closed, honouring a 1980 referendum that backed the phase-out of nuclear power.

Since then, concern over global warming and the need to cut carbon emissions has made many people look on nuclear as not such a bad option after all. By December 2003, only 10 per cent of Swedes still wanted to get rid of all nuclear stations.
