Clean energy special: Gas-guzzling planet

Every year the world consumes energy equivalent to about 10 billion tonnes of crude oil. About 80 per cent of it comes from fossil fuels, venting nearly 25 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The six nations of the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate already account for about half the world’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions, and are forecast to double their total on both counts by 2025.
