London-based social workers go wireless

HUNDREDS of social workers in north London have been issued with internet-enabled PDAs to give them fast wireless access to their clients’ case notes.

The move is a response to a government enquiry into the murder in 2000 of 8-year-old Victoria Climbié by her guardians, now jailed. Its report urged that all social care agencies must be able to share information on a case, and have immediate access to it.

The scheme, operating in the London Borough of Barnet, uses 240 large-screen XDA-II PDAs. Each social worker’s location can also be pinpointed at any time by correlating the addresses of…
