THIS is a very well-researched and satisfying book. It pursues Einstein’s career, but is about the man rather than his achievements. It focuses on the detractors who plagued him throughout his life. These ranged from a physics teacher to the head of the FBI, who considered him a mad scientist and a communist spy and accused him of heading a team developing a death ray. A section called “What was Einstein like face to face”, a collection of testimonies from people who knew him, is sheer enjoyment. There are lots of unfamiliar photographs, starting with the delightful dust jacket.
