A chemical has been discovered that reduces the nose’s ability to detect the odour of farm manure. The fragrant organic ester exploits a process known as “olfactory cross adaptation” – the loss of sensitivity to one smell caused by constant exposure to another. The chemical could be sprayed on farm waste to help farmers and their neighbours coexist more peacefully.
