ONE year after the Indian Ocean tsunami killed more than 300,000 people, efforts to get back to normal are being hampered by a lack of psychological help for survivors. But even this long after the disaster, counselling could still help people suffering from post-traumatic stress.

So far, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the regions devastated by the 26 December tsunami have focused on improving living conditions, on restoring mangroves and coral reefs (see “Buffer zone”, below) and on developing a high-tech alert system to prevent a repeat of the disaster (see “Early warning”, below).
