ASTRONOMERS are the universe’s detectives, working through the night in remote regions of the Earth, combing space and time for clues to our cosmic origins. Perhaps more than anything they hope to catch sight of the very first galaxies, “the cosmic DNA from which all other galaxies were patterned”. Jeff Kanipe’s book is a fast-paced tour of the many challenges and mysteries of that search, from the need for better telescopes to the identities of dark matter and dark energy. Despite the technical language – and a few factual errors – his enthusiasm is bound to excite and inspire.
