US agents swoop on smuggled fossils

1 March 2006

UNDERCOVER federal agents last week announced their latest seizure of contraband smuggled from South America. Not drugs: this was a fossil raid.

Acting on a tip-off from Interpol in Buenos Aires, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized more than 6 tonnes of fossils smuggled from Argentina, including pine cones and dinosaur eggs. The items were on sale at the annual Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase in Tucson, Arizona. Agents mingling with the crowds photographed fossils displayed by the Rhodo Company, and swooped when palaeontologists confirmed the fossils’ origins and scientific value.
