Bogus emailer tries to get bird flu paper withdrawn

A 24-year-old man died of H5N1 bird flu in Beijing in November 2003 – that’s three months before China admitted to H5N1 in chickens, and two years before it owned up to its first human case in November 2005. It’s a revelation someone, somewhere, is trying to suppress.

The report, published on Thursday by Chinese scientists in The New England Journal of Medicine (vol 354, p 2731) did not make clear whether this case was known before and kept quiet, or only recently discovered.
