Hundreds perish as tsunami hits Java

AT LEAST 327 people were killed and 160 are reported missing following Monday’s tsunami on the Indonesian island of Java, say officials and media reports.

The town of Pangandaran on the southern coast was worst hit as the tsunami crashed into fishing villages and resorts. At least 23,000 people fled their homes, so accounting for everyone will take time.

The 2-metre wall of water was unleashed by an undersea quake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale. A different part of Java was struck seven weeks ago by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 5800 people. Pangandaran was spared…
