Physics

From Clockwork to Crapshoot, by Roger Newton

By Robert Matthews

14 February 2007

PHYSICS has come a long way since the 5th century BC when the philosopher Leucippus articulated the notion that nothing happens without reason, everything has a cause and is the result of necessity. Perhaps the biggest development has been the toppling of this view in favour of probability. Roger Newton’s previous books suggest he would have a fascinating take on the history of physics. The reality is a bog-standard plod through the usual stuff and it runs out of puff just as it starts to tackle the current debate over theories of everything.
