AT Christmas as a child I often received an annual, an illustrated yearly book about the characters in my favourite comic. A good one kept me entertained for months. State of the Universe 2007 is an unconventional annual aimed at adults. Billed as a compendium of the newest discoveries in astronomy, it reveals the latest on our favourite astronomical characters – our galaxy, the Hubble Space Telescope and supernova 1987A, among many others. Useful as a summary of the year’s findings for those new to stargazing, in aspiration it is quirky, in execution merely fascinating.
