The most detailed draft yet of a marsupial genome reveals that they have much more sophisticated immune systems than previously assumed. The genome of the short-tailed opossum shows that marsupials had already evolved a complex immune system before they split from placental mammals 180 million years ago (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature05805).
