Embryo screening can reduce chances of birth

A COSTLY fertility treatment that is designed to increase the likelihood of older women giving birth after IVF may actually reduce their chances of having a baby.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) involves removing one or two cells from the early embryo and screening them for chromosome abnormalities that are associated with miscarriage, increasing the chances that only healthy embryos will be implanted.

It is widely offered to older women undergoing IVF – who are at higher risk of producing embryos with an incorrect number of chromosomes – and costs between $3000 and $5000 on top of the cost of regular IVF.
