Fishing boats haul in many creatures besides the catch they want, including endangered animals such as dolphins and fish from depleted species. Researchers at the University of Rhode Island noticed that, unlike other species, netted haddock never swim downwards. So they have designed a net with hatches at the bottom that should retain the haddock but let cleverer critters escape.
