This 85-day-old fetus of a thoroughbred horse did not survive because its mother succumbed to colic and died a quarter of the way through her pregnancy. London-based photographer Tim Flach came across the fetus, preserved in a jar of formalin, on a table in a veterinary surgery and took it back to his studio to shoot. This close-up photograph (see photo, right) of the fetus’s features, from the whisker holes and upturned lips to the delicate hooves and wrinkles on its stomach, provides an arrestingly intimate view.
