BIOMEDICAL research was among the big winners, and physics among the losers, in the latest deal-making over the mammoth US economic stimulus bill.
As New Scientist went to press, the Senate was expected to pass an amended version of the bill, costing an estimated $838 billion. According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, it includes $17.8 billion for research – up from the $13.2 billion proposed by the House of Representatives.
