A CAPE gannet dives after a shoal of millions of migrating pilchard off the coast of Port St Johns, South Africa. Taken by Alexander Safonov, this photo was the winner of the amateur natural history category of the Sony World Photography Awards 2009. The winning pictures, announced this week, will be exhibited at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, from 14 to 19 April.
