Twitter spreads disease

Twitter may be influencing the spread of disease. Vaccination rates are lower in areas where people are more likely to post anti-vaccination tweets, suggesting that opposition to vaccination can spread through Twitter (PLoS Computational Biology, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002199).

Stem-cell patent denied

Stem cells obtained through the destruction of human embryos were declared unpatentable this week by the European Court of Justice, on the grounds that the destruction of embryos fails to respect human dignity. Stem-cell researchers in Europe warned that the commercial development of treatments based on European-funded research would simply move elsewhere in the world.
