Uber wins legal fight

Drive on, Uber. The UK high court has ruled that the taxi-booking firm is legal in London, after it won a case brought by regulator Transport for London (TfL). Black cab drivers in the city had called for TfL to challenge Uber because only they are authorised to use a meter. Uber works out fares using the GPS signal from a driver’s phone. As this calculation takes place on a server outside the vehicle, the court ruled that the firm’s app wasn’t a meter.

It could be made to fit inside a smartphone, says Patel, and was presented at the Ubicomp conference in Osaka, Japan, last month.
