When Austin Haughwout attached a gun to a drone and posted a video online he probably didn’t plan to end up at the centre of a legal case about the future of drone use. Ditto when he uploaded a video of a drone wielding a flamethrower. But his stunts caught the attention of the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates all non-military aircraft in the US. To date, the legal status of drone use has remained murky. The case, which starts on 6 July, should clear things up.

Snooping landlords

The price of housing just went up. UK start-up Source Assured is offering private landlords the ability to vet prospective tenants based on their social media activity. The software compiles a dossier that lists a tenant’s friends and interests, their use of words like “loan” and “pregnant” and the probability they will pay their rent reliably.
