Letter: Letter: Form of address

Published 3 March 1990

From I. C. HILL

Alun Rees’s article reminds me that police advice on security of moveable
property includes writing on it (in invisible ink) the unique code for any
address: the post code followed by the house number. The idea is that, on
recovery, the owner can easily be traced. Not so easy! Last year I tested
this by posting myself a letter from a small town about 8 miles away in
a different postal area from mine. It took nine weeks to arrive, and then
only after the letter had been opened to find my ‘proper’ address.

Three lines? What’s wrong (for postal purposes) with one line?
