Letter: Who needs windows

Published 13 March 1999

From Bill Tarver

I will be in Devon for the eclipse this August, but I wonder if I will see a
repeat of what I saw during my last total eclipse. It was in Brandon, Manitoba,
in February 1979—a cloudless day and a spectacular event, with solar
corona, Bailey’s beads, shadow bands and a brief drop in temperature from
–28 °C to –40 °C.

This may partly explain the attitude of the neighbour on the opposite side of
the street. Despite having a large south-facing window which would have given
him the perfect view, he watched TV throughout. But you could not accuse him of
a lack of interest in matters astronomical because the programme he was watching
was, yes, live coverage of the eclipse in Manitoba.
