Letter: Before the fish

Published 19 June 1999

From Nicholas Ashley

I would very much like to see Mitsubishi’s pre-Cambrian fish
(Editorial, 29 May, p 3),
as I believe the fossil evidence points to fish being around from
late Silurian times and then really taking over during the Devonian period, when
they got bored and started invading the land.

Pre-Cambrian seas were dominated firstly by the Ediacaran fauna followed by
the Burgess Shale fauna. No fish, only early chordates.
