Letter: Global lobbyists

Published 23 October 1999

From Richard Courtney

I had to laugh at Michael Jefferson’s review
(2 October, p 54) of Jeremy
Leggett’s book on global warming, The Carbon War.

Jefferson claims that opponents and sceptics of global warming are
“aggressive industry lobbyists” and that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC)—which promotes the global warming scare—is “the
international scientific panel assessing the world’s climate”. But, in reality,
the IPCC is not the only scientific group assessing the world’s climate.

Many other scientific groups are assessing the world’s climate, and most get
funds from private industries because many industries’ activities are affected
by climate. Politicians establish intergovernmental bodies for their own
political reasons. Scientists have no ability to establish, fund or operate
governmental and intergovernmental bodies.

Importantly, politicians “approve” and “amend” IPCC reports prior to their
publication. Simply put, the IPCC is an aggressive political lobby.
