Letter: Out of control

Published 13 November 1999

From Chris James

Feedback’s list of problems encountered when computer users confuse the
Control and Shift keys
(23 October) doesn’t mention the worst case—Ctrl-N
instead of Shift-N. This causes one’s entire document to disappear completely,
leaving a blank page.

What has actually happened is that you have created a new document (Ctrl-N
being a shortcut for this), which sits on top of the old one. “Undo” (Ctrl-Z)
just produces an irritating sound because it only works in the current
document.

The way out is to close the new blank document, making the original
reappear.

Good old Microsoft.
