Your correspondent Symon Thomas is wrong to say that names like “Thatcher”,
“Fletcher” and so on are early examples of nominative determinism
(16 October, p 59).
Clearly they are examples of “occupational nominativism”, which would allow
me to sign myself Jim Systems-Designer, rather than . . .
