Letter: Laughing matter

Published 4 March 2000

From Paul Williams

So the female spotted hyena has a pseudopenis and pseudoscrotum that are
superficially indistinguishable from the genitals of males
(19 February, p 30).

Does this by any chance account for this animal’s well-known propensity for
hysterical laughter?
