Letter: Sailing into harm's way

Published 2 July 2008

From David Hankey

Paul Marks points out the significant risks posed by the US fitting many more naval ships with highly enriched uranium-fuelled reactors in response to the rising cost of oil (14 June, p 24). But there is a third way. Naval vessels can be powered quite effectively using very low enriched uranium fuel, and run for over 15 years without refuelling, as shown in a paper entitled “An Integrated PWR for Marine Propulsion”, presented in June at the International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants.

This promises to be safer, much more affordable and a less attractive target for terrorists.
