Letter: Angry eyes

Published 18 September 2013

From Jennie Kermode

Martin Van Raay says he would like the computers he uses to be able to recognise anger (24 August, p 30). He may be interested to note that Google recently patented a system that observes pupil dilation in the users of Google Glass-type devices to gauge their emotional reactions to what they see.

Fans of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick, meanwhile, would be amused if computers could carry out Voight-Kampff tests, as featured in his story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In the tale, the test was a way to distinguish between androids and humans by observing changes in the eye brought on by emotions.
