New Scientist presents ...
Online Event: Physics at the End of the Universe
The Universe had a beginning, and it will have an end. Modern cosmology — the study of the nature and evolution of the cosmos itself — has allowed physicists to explain the history of the Universe from the first tiny fraction of a second until today. But what’s next? We now have the tools to extend our knowledge into the distant future and speculate about the ultimate fate of all reality.
Join astrophysicist Katie Mack as she explains how new cutting-edge astronomical observations and particle experiments can tell us which way our cosmos, and everything in it, might reach its ultimate demise. She’ll reveal what the catastrophic destruction of all reality would look like to anyone still around to see it.
Katie Mack, theoretical astrophysicist, North Carolina State University
Dr Katie Mack is a theoretical astrophysicist who studies a range of questions in cosmology, the study of the universe from beginning to end. She received her undergraduate degree at Caltech and PhD from Princeton before going on to postdoctoral fellowships at Cambridge University and Melbourne University.
Katie currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University, where she is also a member of the Leadership in Public Science Cluster. Starting in June 2022, she will be the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.
Throughout her career she has researched dark matter, the early universe, galaxy formation, black holes, cosmic strings, and the ultimate fate of the cosmos. Alongside her academic work, she is an active science communicator and has written for a number of popular publications such as Scientific American, Slate, Sky & Telescope, and Cosmos Magazine, where she is a columnist. In 2021, she released The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking), her book about the end of the universe, published by Scribner. You can find her on Twitter as @AstroKatie.
